My Hair Battles

Breast cancer caused a brief truce in the writer’s love/hate relationship with her curly tresses.

Before I had chemotherapy, I had a volatile relationship with my hair. It was an intense, 34-year affair, with all the usual ups and downs, or rather, in this case, shorts and longs, not to mention straights and frizzies.

Who becomes the caretaker in a medical emergency? Probably not the person you expected.

Last Saturday night, instead of going out for a much-anticipated dinner with my husband and friends, I did something I’ve never done and always hoped I’d never have to do: I dialed 911. My husband’s hip – or should I say the new version of his old hip that he received just a couple of weeks before – decided that the ball and the socket wanted a separation.

Quick. Think back to what you were doing on a specific day 20 years ago. Or what you were wearing. Or even what the weather was like or what you had for dinner that night. Chances are you can’t. (I’m challenged by even trying to remember what I did yesterday.)
